Man Arrested after Barricading Himself with his Son

By KRWG News

Las Cruces, NM – A Las Cruces man was arrested after allegedly attacking his girlfriend and barricading himself with his child.

At around one-thirty this morning Dona Ana county Sheriff's Deputies responded to a domestic violence call on Zeus Street.

When officers arrived they found a woman running from the home with signs of abuse. She told investigators her boyfriend, 37 year old Zachary Barela, threatened her and the entire family.

Barela then barricaded himself with his child, so the Sheriff's Department Special Response Team, Hostage Negotiations Team and the Bomb Team were notified to assist with the incident.

Dona Ana County Sheriff's Investigator, Richard Chavez, says the standoff ended at ten this morning.

According to Chavez, "he actually ended up coming out and was then subsequently detained and was charged with numerous crimes including kidnapping aggravated battery, negligent child abuse, interference with communication and resisting arrest."

Barela is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a $ 150,000 cash only bond.
