Legislators To Consider Navajo Gambling Compact

A legislative panel is to resume consideration of a proposed gambling compact that would allow the Navajo Nation to open three additional casinos.

The Committee on Compacts meets Friday afternoon, and at least one panel member is expected to propose that the Navajos and Gov. Susana Martinez's administration return to the negotiating table and limit the tribe to their current casinos.

The Navajos operate two Las Vegas-style casinos in New Mexico under a compact expiring next year. A third Navajo casino offers low-stakes gambling not subject to state regulation

Other tribes and pueblos have voiced opposition to the new compact, saying their casinos would be hurt if the Navajos are allowed to expand gambling.

The proposed agreement needs approval from the Legislature and U.S. the Interior Department.
