Lawmaker Wants To Repeal Medical Marijuana Law
By KRWG News
New Mexico – A freshman New Mexico lawmaker who's a high school teacher is trying to repeal the state's medical marijuana law.
Republican Rep. Jim Smith of Sandia Park says the law sends the wrong message to kids that somehow marijuana is good for you.
Gov. Susana Martinez has said repealing medical marijuana isn't a priority for her in this legislative session.
But her spokesman says she would sign the bill if it makes it to her desk.
Smith says he's encouraged by an effort in Montana to repeal that state's medical marijuana law.
Smith's bill is expected to be heard next week by the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee.
The vice chairman of that committee, Democratic Rep. Antonio Maestas of Albuquerque, sponsored the 2007 medical marijuana law in the House.
