Lawmaker Proposes Expanding Legislative Webcasting

Sen. Jeff Steinborn

A Las Cruces lawmaker wants to make it easier for the public to follow what happens in the Legislature by expanding the webcasting of legislative committee hearings.

Democratic Rep. Jeff Steinborn said Monday he and other lawmakers will propose a change in legislative rules to require webcasting of interim committee meetings that occur during the summer and fall when the Legislature isn't in session. The panels often meet in communities across the state.

Another proposal will require the Legislature to archive its webcasts of committee meetings that take place during a legislative session.

Currently, the public must watch the Legislature's webcasts live.

However, Republican Gov. Susana Martinez's office archives video of legislative proceedings it webcasts. Those can be found on the governor's web site.
