Las Cruces Utilities Responds to “Discolored” Water Concerns

Las Cruces Utilities (LCU) has been working this week with a company that provides intense filtration of water lines to clear the “discolored” water from water lines in San Andres Estates area off Valley Drive.

The San Andres Water System was part of the Jornada Water Company, which LCU purchased almost two years ago. “We are in the process of rehabilitating and upgrading the 50-year-old system, which had never previously been flushed to clear iron, manganese, and other naturally occurring minerals,” explains LCU Water Administrator, Adrienne L. Widmer, P.E.

Last week, LCU contracted with ValveTek using the patented Neutral Output Discharge Elimination System (NO-DES) technology, which is onsite this week forcing water at a very high pressure through multiple micron filters, from one fire hydrant to another, clearing water lines and putting the clean and clear water right back into the system. “There is no water waste like there is when we flush hydrants to clear lines,” notes Widmer. “And while NO-DES is working in one section, the rest of the system still has water, so outages should not be that long.” The project should be completed by Friday, July 20, 2018.

“Although some residents have had concerns, the majority are happy LCU is taking action and with the results we are getting,” says Widmer. LCU encourages the public to go by and look at the ValveTek process, to see what a difference there is in the water before and after the water cleaning. Anyone who continues to have discolored water, please call LCU Emergency Dispatch 24-hours a day at (575) 526-0500.

You can reach Las Cruces Utilities at 528-3500 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Las Cruces Utilities provides GAS – WATER – WASTEWATER – SOLID WASTE services to approximately 100,000 Las Cruces residents and businesses.
