Las Cruces Police Officer Injured In Crash

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Las Cruces Police motorcycle officer Michael Clifton was transported to an area hospital Thursday for injuries he received in a crash on I-25.

Clifton, 25, was on duty and en route to another traffic crash when he apparently lost control of his unit near mile marker 7 on Interstate Highway 25. Clifton was treated at the scene by first-responders from the Las Cruces Fire Department and then transported by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center with multiple, non life-threatening, injuries. Clifton was later taken to University Medical Center of El Paso for more advanced care.

Clifton, a five-year veteran of the Las Cruces Police Department, was driving south on I-25 on his department-issue 2009 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide when the crash occurred.

New Mexico State Police are investigating the crash. As is standard procedure for any duty-related crash, the Las Cruces Police Department also will look into the incident.

Earlier this year, Clifton placed first in his age group during the 2009 International Police Mountain Bike Association conference held April 29-May 2 in Albuquerque, N.M. Clifton participated as a member of LCPD's Dezert Ratz' Mountain Bike Team.
