Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, working with ZVRS and the New Mexico Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, is pleased to announce the acquisition of a free, publicly available video relay service for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The video relay service (VRS) caller uses a video display, broadband internet and a qualified sign-language interpreter to communicate over the phone with a hearing person. This specialized system allows people whose primary language is American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate in ASL rather than trying to type out what they want to say. As a result, the communication flows more naturally and those using ASL can express themselves better. In addition, VRS calls may be made between ASL users and hearing persons in either English or Spanish.
“Working with the NMCDHH and ZVRS has given us a great opportunity to expand our services,” said Margaret Neill, library administrator. “I’m pleased that we are now able to help people who are deaf or hard of hearing connect to their friends, family and necessary services.”
The Purple VRS is in a small study room and is available, free of charge, to the public. Patrons who wish to access it should contact the Reference Department, either through email atlibrary.reference@las-cruces.org, phone, 575/528-4005 or in person at the Reference Desk. The VRS is available during regular library hours.
