Las Cruces Charter School Denied

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Education Secretary Veronica Garcia has upheld a Public Education Commission decision to deny the applications of two prospective charter schools in Albuquerque and Las Cruces.

Garcia said Wednesday the applications to receive a state charter from Sandia Academy in Albuquerque and Senator Dennis Chavez school in Las Cruces were inadequate. The decision was announced Friday.

The schools' applications were denied in September. They appealed the decision to the secretary and separate hearings on their applications were held in December.

Charter schools are public, tuition-free schools that have unique academic missions.

They are governed by their own boards and must be approved by the Public Education Commission or a local school board.
