Las Cruces Bicyclist Charged With Child Abuse

Las Cruces – A bicyclist haphazardly carrying his 2-year-old daughter as he pedaled in and out of traffic lanes has been charged with negligent child abuse.

Peter Leon Rodriguez, 21, was spotted at around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1, by a Las Cruces Police Department detective who was on-duty and driving north on Mesquite Street.

The detective witnessed Rodriguez holding the child under one arm and steering the bicycle with one hand. Rodriguez appeared to be having difficulty keeping the bicycle balanced while meandering in and out of traffic lanes.

The 2-year-old was wrapped in a blanket and wearing only a diaper that was soiled. The child did not appear to be injured. Detectives are continuing their investigation and additional charges against Rodriguez are possible.

Rodriguez was transported to the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $10,000.
