John Sanchez Raises Money During Special Session
By KRWG News
New Mexico – SANTA FE, N.M. (KRWG) Republican Lt. Gov. John Sanchez is raising money for his U.S. Senate campaign during the Legislature's special session and he says there's no ethical problem with that fundraising.
Sanchez has a fundraiser scheduled Thursday at a Santa Fe restaurant.
New Mexico law prohibits legislators and the governor from soliciting contributions during a special session.
However, state law doesn't apply to contributions to candidates for federal office. That's according to an attorney general's opinion issued in 2007, when Democratic Gov. Bill Richardson was running for president.
As lieutenant governor, Sanchez presides over the state Senate and can vote to break ties.
Sanchez and former Congresswoman Heather Wilson are among the GOP candidates for the Senate seat being vacated by Democratic incumbent Jeff Bingaman
