New Mexico – Researchers from New Mexico and Alabama say they've made a breakthrough that makes hydrogen a more attractive fuel for vehicles.
Los Alamos National Laboratory and University of Alabama have revealed a single-stage method for recharging the hydrogen storage compound ammonia borane.
The researchers working with the U.S. Department of Energy's Chemical Hydrogen Storage Center of Excellence describe the advance in hydrogen storage science in an article in the March 18 edition of Science magazine.
The paper describes regenerating ammonia borane from a hydrogen-depleted form back into usable fuel via reactions taking place in one container.
They say that represents a significant step toward the practical use of hydrogen in vehicles because it has the potential to reduce the expense and complexity of the recycle stage.
