Heinrich Statement On Singapore Summit

U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM)

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 13, 2018) -  U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement on President Trump’s meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un in Singapore:

“In the same week that he pushed away our closest allies at the G7 summit, President Trump embraced a murderous dictator and legitimized him on the world stage. At the Singapore Summit, our President announced that the United States would suspend joint military exercises with our allies and eventually remove our military forces from the Korean peninsula – two of China and North Korea’s most coveted demands—without receiving any real commitments from them.”

“Before President Trump conceded, we should have received a real and complete commitment to denuclearize the Korean peninsula and had a plan to verify it through robust inspections and a monitoring regime. Instead, all we received were talking points from a notoriously untrustworthy dictator and outlandish claims over Twitter. I will continue to support tough sanctions and a diplomatic solution, but we should be smart and strategic in our negotiations.”
