Heinrich Calls For House To Pass Immigration Reform

Senator Martin Heinrich (D) New Mexico

U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement on the new set of principles on immigration reform put forward by House Republican leaders:

"The lack of consensus among House Republicans on immigration reform has been disappointing, so I'm encouraged by the recent progress made toward finding common ground and common sense solutions. I'm especially pleased that there's consensus that we need to provide a special pathway to citizenship to DREAMers.

"But the reality is, passing immigration reform is long overdue. New Mexicans are eager for a solution, DREAM Act students deserve a solution, and our economy requires a solution. Fixing our broken immigration system means including a visa system that meets the needs of our economy, a tough but fair path to earned citizenship for the estimated 11 million people in our country who are undocumented, and a plan that ensures security at our borders.

"The Senate has taken action, and it's time for the House to do the same and pass accountable immigration reform."
