New Mexico – The state has reached a $13 million settlement with Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. over groundwater contamination from mining in southwestern New Mexico.
The state Office of Natural Resources Trustee said money from the settlement will be used for restoration projects. About $200,000 is to reimburse the state for damage assessment costs.
Gov. Bill Richardson said Thursday the settlement serves as a model for resolving natural resource damage claims.
