Fort Bliss To Build U.S. Military's Largest Solar Farm

A West Texas military base says it plans to have the largest solar energy farm in the U.S. military.

Fort Bliss commander Gen. Dana Pittard said Friday the 20-megawatt solar farm is expected to provide about a third of the base's electric needs. The farm will join two other solar projects that have a combined output of 14.8 megawatts.

Construction on the project, being built by El Paso Electric, will begin next year and should be completed by the end of 2015. It's the first time the Army has partnered with a local utility on a renewable energy project of this size.

Pittard says the project is part of an effort that will allow Fort Bliss to produce all of its energy by 2018.
