Filing Deadline Looms For New Mexico Legislators

New Mexico legislators are nearly out of time for deciding whether to seek re-election.

Tuesday is the filing deadline for candidates for the 70-member House and some other offices, including the Public Regulation Commission.

At least 10 incumbent House members have announced they're retiring.

This year's legislative races will determine whether Democrats retain a House majority. Currently there are 37 Democrats and 33 Republicans in the House.

Republicans haven't held a House majority since the 1953-1954 Legislature.

Senators aren't up for election until 2016.

Legislative candidates in single county districts file with their local county clerks. Candidates in multicounty districts file with the secretary of state.

The secretary of state's office says its web site will be updated throughout the day with candidate filings from across New Mexico.
