Eastern N.M. Rodeo Team Member Fatally Injured

An Eastern New Mexico University rodeo team member from northern New Mexico has died after being injured during practice when he was stepped on by a bull.

The university says 20-year-old bull rider Irvyng Urquijo (ur-KEY'-hoe) died Tuesday night at a hospital in Portales. He was a sophomore animal and dairy science major from Springer, N.M.

Team coach Albert Flinn says Urqujo was injured earlier Tuesday evening when he was thrown from the bull and it stepped on him.

Eastern New Mexico President Steven Gamble says the university community shares the grief of Urquijo's family and friends. He says counselors are reaching out to those needing support.
