Authorities say a prescription drug that is being smuggled into New Mexico's prisons via envelopes, stamps and children's drawings has now been found in a package of legal paperwork.
The prescription drug Suboxone was found in paperwork sent to an inmate at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility. A drug-sniffing dog found 20 strips of the drug, which is used to treat opiate addition.
The incident remains under investigation.
Authorities say inmates often sell smuggled Suboxone to other inmates for a profit.
To battle the rise in Suboxone smuggling, prison officials have been training guards how to look for drugs in the mail and during inmate visits and other interactions. Officials have also been looking into new technology to help spot the drug.
