Dogs Quarantined After Gruesome Discovery

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Seven small dogs are quarantined at an animal shelter in southern New Mexico after their 98-year-old owner's toes were eaten as she slept.

Las Cruces officials said Tuesday the bedridden woman's toes might have been eaten by rodents inside her home.

Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley director Beth Vesco-Mock confirmed for the Las Cruces Sun-News the dogs, two pugs, four Chihuahuas and a heeler puppy were being watched for signs of rabies because of the incident.

An animal cruelty investigator says they can't be sure the dogs were the ones who ate the woman's toes because it appears there were rats in the house.

Authorities say the victim lacks feeling in her extremities. She was transported to a hospital Monday after a caregiver discovered the injuries to her toes.
