New Mexico – The state Court of Appeals has ruled that Gov. Bill Richardson's administration acted properly in redacting information from public records sought by the state Republican Party about illegal immigrants who got driver's licenses in New Mexico.
The court on Friday concluded the state Motor Vehicle Division and Taxation and Revenue Department properly blacked out personal information, such as names and addresses of drivers, from documents provided to the GOP.
The agencies also properly withheld some information on grounds of executive privilege and attorney-client privilege, the court ruled.
The GOP submitted a request in 2006 under the state Inspection of Public Records Act. It had hoped to use the information to check on possible voter fraud and whether illegal immigrants were registered to vote.
