China Exhibit Coming To Silver City

By KRWG News

Silver City – The Western New Mexico University Museum has announced the installation of its newest short-term exhibition. Traditional Apparel and Jewelry of Rural China is open to the public from March 15 through May 31, 2011.

The collection, consisting of a beautiful arrangement of Chinese clothing, jewelry and other artifacts often used by rural Chinese groups, belongs to Bob and Xinyan Weeks of Silver City. Xinyan is employed at the WNMU Student Support Center.

The WNMU Museum will host an exhibition preview and reception on Thursday, April 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Mrs. Weeks will facilitate a short presentation in the University Museum Classroom. Seating is limited. Refreshments will be served at the reception.

Mrs. Weeks was born and raised in the mountainous region of Guangxi Province, China. After her college experience at Hainan University, she revisited her home. She remembered her grandmother and desired to understand her cultural heritage. She purchased a ceremonial piece to learn about its history and the knowledge it carried. Her appreciation of her heritage grew and so did her collection. From 1992 to 2005, her collection expanded to over 100 items, each one representing to her an intriguing part of Chinese history. The collected items together tell different stories which Mrs. Weeks shares in the new exhibition.

Traditional Apparel and Jewelry of Rural China is funded in part by ASWNMU Student Fees. The WNMU Museum is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
