Boxing Ring Memorial Erected At Tapia Gravesite

Johnny Tapia's gravesite in Albuquerque now has a unique memorial, thanks to family and friends of the late boxer.  A small replica boxing ring has been set up at the site to pay tribute to the five-time champion.

The Albuquerque City Council shelved a proposal in December to rename a community center after Tapia. Critics pointed to his drug addiction and legal troubles as reasons why the proposal shouldn't be passed.

Councilman Ken Sanchez says he'll consider other options, like proposing to name a room or gym after Tapia.

The 45-year-old boxer was found dead May 27 at his Albuquerque home. His turbulent boxing career was marked by cocaine addiction, alcohol, depression and run-ins with the law. Tapai's family says he died from heart disease and high blood pressure.
