Las Cruces – Michael Young, interim associate dean for research and interim academic head for the College of Health and Social Services has been elected to the position of chair of the editorial board for the Journal of School Health where he will serve a one-year term.
Under this title, Young will represent the interests of the Journal on the board of directors of the American School Health Association, one of the premier health organizations in the nation.
"As the health needs of our population continue to grow, the importance of this position is of paramount importance," said Educational Outreach Coordinator and CHSS Employee Council Representative Bob Nosbisch.
The journal under ASHA is committed to communicating information regarding the role of schools and school personnel in facilitating the development and growth of healthy youth and healthy school environments. On the editorial board, Young will assist the editor of the publication with research and policy changes, reach out to authors and strengthen the quality of the journal.
"Eventually, we want the publication to be regarded an international journal," Young said. "As chair, I want to represent the journal with a clear focus on research, figure out ways to respond quicker to authors and better our policies."
Young has been a fellow of ASHA since 2009. He is also the director of the Southwest Institute for Health Disparities Research and chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences in the College of Health and Social Services at NMSU.
The American School Health Association's mission is to build the capacity of its members to plan, develop, coordinate, implement, evaluate and advocate for effective school health strategies that contribute to optimal health and academic outcomes for all children and youth.
