Auburn Administrator Named NMSU Dean Of Arts And Sciences

Las Cruces – Christa D. Lowder Slaton, associate dean for educational affairs and graduate studies for the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University, has accepted an appointment as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at New Mexico State University.

NMSU President Barbara Couture noted Slaton's strength as an administrator and a highly accomplished educator.

"Dr. Slaton is exactly the kind of leader we hoped to find for the College of Arts and Sciences," Couture said. "We gain a breadth of experience with Dr. Slaton. She is an accomplished scholar, an award-winning teacher and an experienced college administrator. She will serve our students and faculty extremely well."

Slaton has been the associate dean for educational affairs and graduate studies in the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University since 2007.

"My visit to New Mexico State University reinforced my view that the university is led by dedicated, visionary administrators and faculty and is strongly supported by staff, students, and alumni," Slaton said. "The university is deeply committed to serving the population of New Mexico and helping students succeed."

Slaton is honored to be selected dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

"I am excited about this challenging opportunity. The college has exceptional faculty who excel in teaching, research and outreach," Slaton said. "There are many exciting projects and programs currently under way in the College of Arts and Sciences and I look forward to supporting these initiatives and working with faculty, students, staff and administrators to keep New Mexico State on the cutting edge of research and innovation."

For the last eight years, Slaton also has served as Director of the Elections Administration Program at Auburn University. From 1997-1999, Slaton was the director of the Master in Public Administration Program at Auburn.

"I envision my role as dean as encouraging faculty achievement, promoting student success, and facilitating the college's and the university's development," Slaton said. "My experiences as a faculty member and administrator have reinforced my commitment to collaborating with others in an environment of openness and accessibility. President Couture has established a collaborative, energetic approach that will inspire teamwork to continue to build the reputation of New Mexico State University."

Slaton is a professor of political science and began her teaching career in Hawaii. She received her bachelor's in psychology from the University of Tennessee and master's and doctorate in political science from the University of Hawaii.

Slaton will join NMSU in mid July.

"I have long been in love with The Land of Enchantment and travel to New Mexico several times a year," Slaton said. "There is no better place for me than a land-grant, research institution in a location that is known for its beauty and the friendliness and generosity of its people."
