Arrest In February 2009 Las Cruces Sexual Assault

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Las Cruces Police have arrested the suspect wanted for a sexual assault that occurred in February 2009 at an apartment complex on the 1900 block of Wyoming Avenue.

Luis Anthony Cobarrubia, 35, is charged with three second-degree felony counts including criminal sexual penetration, kidnapping and aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon. Cobarrubia is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $500,000.

Cobarrubia was arrested Monday afternoon on a court-issued warrant. Las Cruces Police and LCPD's SWAT team initiated the warrant at a residence on Care Bear Lane, off Holman Road, just north of Las Cruces. Officers from New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office and agents from the FBI's gang task force assisted in serving the warrant.

Cobarrubia was arrested after a brief foot pursuit when he attempted to flee from officers.

The sexual assault occurred during the evening of February 12, 2009. Detectives learned that the 20-year-old woman was inside her apartment when she was approached by Cobarrubia who had - unbeknownst to the victim - gained access to her home.

Detectives learned that Cobarrubia held the victim against her will for approximately two hours while he sexually assaulted her.

Police believe Cobarrubia may have committed at least two other sexual assaults and there is a possibility that other potential victims have yet to come forward. Detectives are continuing their investigations and additional charges against Cobarrubia are possible.

Anyone who may be a victim of such a crime is strongly encouraged to contact police at (575) 528-4222.
