Alamogordo Examines Land For Solar Plant

By KRWG News

Alamogordo – Alamogordo will pay nearly $25,000 to do an environmental study on a plot of land it wants to sell for use as a solar plant.

The proposed Public Service Company of New Mexico plant would be located on 60 acres near the airport.

City attorney Stephen Thies told the City Commission this week that the Federal Aviation Administration must approve the deal and is requiring the environmental assessment.

The Alamogordo Daily News reports that the city approved $500,000 sale in July, but it requires them to receive FAA approval before the deal closes.

The FAA must review the site to determine if it might been needed for an airport expansion.

The company hired by the Commission plans to argue that a thorough environmental review isn't needed.

Construction on the plant could begin by March.
