300 New Mexico Businesses Get Insurance Through Exchange

Nearly 300 New Mexico businesses have completed the enrollment process to obtain health insurance for their workers through a state-run marketplace.

Health insurance exchange board member Jason Sandel told a legislative committee on Thursday that 925 businesses have started signing up for health coverage and 294 have finished the process, which allows workers to start selecting an insurance plan.

New Mexico is operating an online exchange for small businesses to shop for coverage for their employees and later will make it available for individuals. For now, individuals must use a federally operated exchange that's been plagued with computer problems.

Sandel expressed frustration with the federal exchange and said its problems will make it difficult to meet a goal of enrolling 84,000 New Mexicans in the first year.
