$2,200 To Join The Choir?
Albuquerque school district members are expressing unease with costly fees that students and their parents face for participation in activities such as sports, show choir and band.
According to the Albuquerque Journal, one high school's fees for choir total $2,200, students at another high school must commit to raise $1,000 to participate in band, and football players at a third must come up with $300.
Board member Martin Esquivel says students from low-income families may be intimidated and decide not to participate in activities with large fees even if there's help with fundraising.
Superintendent Winston Brooks says there's no easy answer.
But Brooks says the district is gathering information on booster groups' finances because expectations vary widely among schools and activities.
