Las Cruces, NM – Two water use and management bills introduced in the New Mexico Legislature by Representative Joseph Cervantes of Las Cruces passed through the House unanimously on Thursday. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, if house bill 579 becomes law, it could save Dona Ana County taxpayers $250,000.
Las Cruces, NM – The New Mexico State Senate passed a bill yesterday/Monday meant to fight cervical cancer by making it mandatory for girls entering the sixth grade to be vaccinated against the Human Papillomavirus, or HPV. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, the bill was sponsored by Senator and OBGYN Physician Steve Komadina.
Las Cruces, NM – Landowners in New Mexico may have more protection from oil and gas companies who wish to drill on their land if a new piece of legislation gets passed. As KRWG's Charles Winiecki reports, the Surface Owners' Protection Act would require notification of drilling on private land and compensate land owners if there is damage to their land during the drilling process.
Las Cruces, NM – Dona Ana County will open all one hundred and six voting precincts in the County for the upcoming special election on the quarter percent spaceport gross receipts tax. The County Commission was originally going to consolidate the election into 37 polling places, but now will have around 75. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, some local citizens voiced their concerns about the lack of polling places, and after a lengthy debate the Commission granted their request.

Hobbs, NM – New Mexico is one of two states where cockfighting is legal. But that could soon change if a ban is approved in the state House. Advocates of the ban say cockfighting is violent, cruel and a form of illegal gambling. Opponents argue it's just like any other blood sport, but also a way of life. They say a ban would be racist and deny their cultural heritage. KRWG's Jodi Breisler visited a game cock farm and spoke with the Senator sponsoring the ban to take a closer look.
Las Cruces, NM – Ground was broken this morning in downtown Las Cruces for a new Federal Courthouse. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, over 60 million dollars will be used to construct the facility.
Las Cruces, NM – Over 93% of Dona Ana County Residents listen to the radio at least once a week. That's according to the ratings company Arbitron. Las Cruces has just become Arbitron's newest measured radio market. As KRWG's Jodi Breisler reports, industry representatives predict this will bring more national and regional advertising dollars to Las Cruces.
